D'ISRAELI, BENJAMIN:
- 1. English merchant and financier; born in Venice Sept. 22, 1730; died at Stoke Newington, London, in 1816. He went to England in 1748, and settled there as a merchant, though he did not take out papers of denization till 1801.Though a conforming Jew, and though contributing liberally toward the support of the synagogue, D'Israeli appears never to have cordially or intimately, mixed with the community; only on one occasion did he serve in a minor office—that of inspector of charity schools in the year 1782.
- 2. Public notary in Dublin, Ireland, 1788-96; died at Beechey Park, county of Carlow, Aug. 9, 1814, and was buried in St. Peter's churchyard, Dublin.
