FRANCHETTI, LEOPOLDO, BARON:
Italian deputy; born at Florence in 1847; studied law at Pisa. In company with Deputy Sidney Sonnino he undertook a journey to Sicily for the purpose of studying the social, political, and economic conditionsof that island; their observations were subsequently published in two volumes. In 1878 he together with Sonnino founded the weekly "Rassegna Settimanale," which was later converted into the daily "La Rassegna" and published at Rome; it was subsequently discontinued for lack of circulation. In the last decade of the nineteenth century Franchetti became governor of the East-African colony Eritrea. On his election to Parliament Franchetti interested himself especially in the affairs of the navy, and has published many parliamentary reports.
