HALFORD, GEORGE EDWARD:
Private in the mounted infantry of the City of London Imperial Volunteers; born 1878; died at Karee, near Bloemfontein, May 15, 1900, during the war with the Transvaal (1899-1900). He was educated at University College School, London, and, entering the volunteers, became lance-corporal in the 1st Middlesex (Victoria and St. George's). On the outbreak of war he enlisted among the mounted infantry of the volunteer force, and took part in the fighting round Paardeberg; serving later as one of the escort of the Boer general Cronje as far as the Modder River station on his way to Cape Town and St. Helena. Halford subsequently took part in the great march to Bloemfontein; and its accompanying hardships and privations culminated in an attack of fever to which he succumbed.
